Legal Aid Act (No. 36 of 1997)

The Act makes provision for the establishment and operation of a co-ordinated legal aid system in Jamaica and establishes a Legal Aid Council to administer legal aid.

Active transparency (Section 4(2))

The Legal Aid Council shall promote programmes designed to enhance public awareness of the legal aid system in Jamaica.

Facilitation of access to justice (Section 4)

The Legal Aid Council shall provide and administer legal aid and establish and organize legal aid clinics for the purpose of providing legal aid to persons of small or moderate means. The Council shall have power to determine the elegibility of applicants. Legal aid may be provided in criminal and civil matters. In civil matters, aid may be granted to any person in need of legal services in any civil cause or matter or who becomes a party to a cause or intends to appeal against a final judgement.
