The Act provides for the recognition and protection of collective rights of Amerindian Villages and Communities in Guyana and the promotion of good governance.

This Act provides for the management, conservation, protection and improvement of the environment, the prevention or control of pollution, the assessment of the impact of economic development on the environment, the sustainable use of natural resources and other related matters in Guyana. 

The Constitution of Guyana recognizes the right of every person to an environment that is not harmful to his or her health or well-being and the duty of every citizen to participate in activities designed to improve the environment and protect the health of the nation.
