UN Economic and Social Council welcomes the Escazú Agreement

On 22 July 2021, the United Nations Economic and Social Council adopted its resolution 2021/31 in follow-up to the Escazú Agreement.

The Council acknowledged the entry into force and welcomed the Escazú Agreement as the first treaty concluded under the auspices of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. 

The Escazú Agreement for youth

On the occasion of International Youth Day and in the framework of the #ThursdaysforEscazú campaign, the Secretariat published cartoons on the Escazú Agreement on Thursdays during August and September 2021.

Their aim was to sensitize different audiences about the content and scope of the Agreement, focusing on specific articles.

In addition to a general cartoon, illustrations were published for article 5 (access to environmental information), article 6 (generation and dissemination of environmental information), article 7 (public participation in environmental decision-making processes), article 8 (access to justice in environmental matters) and article 9 (human rights defenders in envornmental matters).

The Observatory on Principle 10 in Latin America and the Caribbean has a new design

The Observatory on Principle 10 in Latin America and the Caribbean has a new design with updated content. 

The Observatory includes the latest developments on access rights in the region, as well as additional resources, such as graphs. It also allows to search content and establishes links with the Sustainable Development Goals

The Escazú Agreement is highlighted in national and regional events

The Secretariat co-organized a Workshop on the Escazú Agreement in Belize (28 July 2021) and a webinar on the implications of the Escazú Agreement for the mining sector in Argentina (23 September 2021). 

The Agreement was also highlighted in different activities: 

- Argentina: The Escazú Agreement, a commitment with environmental democracy (16 July 2021)

- Brazil: Dialogue on the Escazú Agreement (13 July 2021)

- Chile: Webinar Global Compact "Five years on from the EPR Law" (2 September 2021)

- Colombia: Escazú for climate action (4 August 2021)

- Peru: Defending earth rights in Latin America (5 August 2021); The Escazú Agreement against climate change (8 September 2021)
